This was my first creative technology coursework project at UWE Bristol. We were asked to research, design and develop an interactive audio/visual system based on some aspect of nature for kids that will be designed for installation in a specific context in Bristol. My research project looked into some of the environmental factors (like water displacement & sound) affecting the distribution (movement & survival) of aquatic animals (fish). As a result, an interactive audio-visual system that receives data inputs such as touch and sound was built to displace fishes in a virtual aquarium. Project site

FISHES SWIMMING IN THEIR NORMAL STATE

 

FISHES REACTING TO WATER DISPLACEMENT

In this video, the fishes are reacting to water displacement (ripple formation). In reality, fish movements are affected by the level of water current and the composition of the fish community.

 

FISHES REACTING TO SOUND

In this video, the fishes are reacting to sound. In reality, some fishes run away from sound, some run towards it, and some don’t bother.

 

This project happens to be production ready, and all that’s needed is a large touch screen for installation in a public space like an aquarium.
